Studio Photography
Studio photography
Studio photography is mainly used for certain genres that are involved with magazines and newspapers. The different genres that use studio photography include Fashion, Portraiture and Still Life.
Shadows
The length and boldness of a shadow is decided by the power of the light source and the distance to the subject or model and the type of light that is used. To prevent shadow, either more light is needed or a more direct light source that is directly in front of the subject or model.
Diffusers
The purpose of a diffusor is to evenly spread the light, so that there are limited or no shadows and so that all of the detail on the models face is highlighted by the light. Soft boxes are the most common type of diffusers, they have a reflective finish inside that increases the amount of light that is portrayed outwards onto the model or subject.

Reflectors
Reflectors are one of the most commonly used equipment in studio photography.You can use them to lighten up shadows, or to reflect a colored light onto the mold or subject. You can buy them in various sizes and shapes, with each one being as effective as each other but for different scenarios.
Flashes
If you’re using studio flashes, a good starting point would be to use an ISO of 100, with shutter speed of about 1/125. However it will change depending on what sort of shoot your doing and whether it is low key or high key lighting.
High Key Lighting
High Key lighting is a bright image that is usually done on a white background. This is because the aim is to eliminate all of the shadows on a models face. By doing this, it allows the camera to capture of of the details from the face downwards.
Low Key Lighting
Low Key lighting is the opposite of high key lighting. Low Key involves shooting on a dark background. This creates deep shadows around all forms of the model or subject. Usually it gives the feel of a moody, sometimes angry look that is portrayed by the shadows of the lighting. Usually a soft box is used, with a beauty dish to give enough light to still brighten up the models faced on a dark background.
Project Plan
For this brief i plan to create a variety of pictures that would be suitable for a Rock website. To do this i plan to get a model into the studio and take a variety of high key photos. I am using High Key Lighting because it want to do a shoot that highlights to models face so that the models face and clothing is available to see easily. Low Key lighting could be good, because it would show the mood of the models face more, however if this photo was to go on the front of a magazine or on a website, the clothing needs to be easily visible with virtually no shadows. For the shoot i plan to use a lot of key lighting that is necessary for a high key lighting shoot. The equipment would include 2 Soft Boxes, a beauty dish and camera flash is necessary for a successful shoot.
This is an example of High Key lighting, as you can see the photo is shot in front of a white backdrop and the model has no shadows on his face or body. By having no shadows it allows you to see both sides of his face.
This is an example of a Low Key Lighting shoot. As you can see, by using Low Key lighting it sets a moody look within the model. By having the shadows on the models face, it naturally sets an expression on the models face without any need for the model to pose.
I think overall the shoot went well, the shoot was for a website on the 'Rock Band Theme' which is why i chose my model that what interested in Rock. I took a variety of photos, some up close and some full length body shots. This is so that i had a variety of good photos to choose from. For this shoot i used 2 soft boxes. If i was to do this shoot again i would evenly spread the 2 soft boxes and i would use a beauty dish from directly in front of the model. This is so that i would eliminate all of the shadows that are present in these photos. By having a soft box on the left of the model as well as the right, it evenly spreads the shadows so that there is limited shadows.
